Heshima Activities

For Children

Similar to what we offered in Kisumu, we hope to offer children in our local community the chance to participate in the following:

·         trampolining

·         riding tricycles

·         playing in a paddling pool

·         playing in a sand pit

·         role play

·         playing with train sets and lego

·         listening to stories and the opportunity to borrow books

·         playing football and volleyball

·         painting pictures and general craft activities

·         making music

Why is this important?

Many of the children in our local community have no access to books or toys and so do not learn through play.  Research shows that the early years are the most important in child development and that imaginative play and creativity are essential in the development of a well-rounded individual.  Much of the local education system is based on the rote-learning of facts and we want to supplement this with promoting creativity and imagination.

Activities for Teenagers

Similar to what we offered in Kisumu we would like to offer teenagers the opportunity to participate in the following:

·         the chance to develop their skills in a variety of sports including football; volleyball and trampolining

·         the chance to face challenges as a team through expeditions, camping and team building activities

·         the chance to develop skills in the Arts

·         the chance to learn how to use IT

·         homework support including English lessons

·         the use of a library to borrow books

·         the chance to meet and share ideas and projects with teenagers from around the world

Why is this important?

Many teenagers in the Kisongo area are disillusioned with the lack of opportunities available to them.  If their English is limited they are seriously disadvantaged by the time they reach secondary education and as a result many Maasai teenagers are marginalized. We hope that this centre will encourage young people to build on their strengths and that we can support them in their learning through homework clubs, extra English lessons and the chance to use IT and borrow books. We also aim to educate young people on key issues such as relationships and drug abuse through drama, music and activities.
